The Laureus World Sports Awards is an annual award ceremony honoring remarkable individuals from the world of sports along with the greatest sporting achievements throughout the year. It was established in 1999 by founding patrons Daimler and Richemont and is supported by its global partners Mercedes-Benz and IWC Schaffhausen. The first gala was held on May 25, 2000 in Monte Carlo.

The names of the six nominees for the Laureus World Sportsman, Sportswoman, Team, Breakthrough, Comeback and Action Sports Awards come from the votes of the Laureus Media Selection Panel. This exclusive panel consists of leading sports editors, writers, broadcasters and online journalists from around the world. The Nominees for the Laureus World Sportsperson with a Disability Award are chosen by a specialist panel. The members of the Laureus World Sports Academy vote by secret ballot to select the winners in all seven categories.
The Laureus World Sports Awards will be aired live in over 100 countries and will be available to more than one billion viewers, in addition to a traditional post-produced distribution to 180 countries and territories worldwide.
The 2014 Laureus Awards Ceremony, which is being held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Wednesday, March 26, will be attended by a star-studded audience of sportsmen and sportswomen and guests from the worlds of fashion, entertainment and business.
The soccer/football world will be watching eagerly as Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, Germany’s Nadine Angerer, Brazil’s Ronaldinho and the Bundesliga’s Bayern Munich vie for top honors in their categories. Previous honorees from the beautiful game include Sir Alex Ferguson, Pelé, Rondaldo and Zinedine Zidane.
The Laureus World Sports Awards, being staged for the 15th time, is the premier honors event on the international sporting calendar. The winners, as voted by the Laureus World Sports Academy, the ultimate sports jury, made up of 46 of the greatest living sports legends, will be unveiled at the Istana Budaya in Kuala Lumpur.
The Awards Ceremony will be hosted by British actor Benedict Cumberbatch, and Oscar and Grammy winner Jamie Foxx will be performing on stage.
Among the Asian broadcasters taking the show live will be: RTM (Malaysia), Shanghai Media Group (China), Fox Sports (Australia), Mediacorp (Singapore), Star Sports (India) Fox Sports (Pan-Asia). Many millions more viewers around the world will see the post-produced show in the days after the Awards Ceremony, as well as the hundreds of millions who will see news of the event distributed by Laureus on the night of the Awards. The Awards Ceremony will be hosted by British actor Benedict Cumberbatch, and Oscar and Grammy winner Jamie Foxx will be performing on stage.
Among the Asian broadcasters taking the show live will be: RTM (Malaysia), Shanghai Media Group (China), Fox Sports (Australia), Mediacorp (Singapore), Star Sports (India) Fox Sports (Pan-Asia). Many millions more viewers around the world will see the post-produced show in the days after the Awards Ceremony, as well as the hundreds of millions who will see news of the event distributed by Laureus on the night of the Awards.
